Jarmin Yeh, PhD, MPH, MSSW (Co-chair)

Bio

Jarmin Yeh, PhD, MPH, MSSW, is an Associate Professor in the Institute for Health & Aging, Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences, in the School of Nursing at UCSF. They are a sociologist, gerontologist, and age-friendly cities and health researcher. Their work broadly investigates social justice issues that impact the quality of life of community-dwelling older adults, people living with dementia, and caregivers. They lead the CARING (Community Action Research in Gerontology) Lab, which encompasses a portfolio of community-engaged and interdisciplinary projects that aim to advance health equity in aging, and serve as a co-director of the UCSF Emancipatory Sciences Lab, founded by Dr. Carroll L. Estes. Jarmin is an affiliate faculty member with the UCSF Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies and UCSF Bioethics and teaches in the UCSF Master of Science in Healthcare Administration and Interprofessional Leadership (MS-HAIL) Program. 

 

James Harrison, PhD (Co-chair)

Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of California San Francisco

 

 

Bio

Dr. James Harrison is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of California San Francisco. James is a researcher and implementation scientist who uses patient engagement to improve the hospital care transitions of older adults. His vision is to transform health systems so that older adults are at the center of innovation discovery. He seeks to develop and implement care transition interventions that bring the patient voice to the forefront which are then sustained in real-world clinical settings. James also has a leadership role within UCSF Health’s Age Friendly Health System where he is Research Director. In this role he seeks to build capacity and research infrastructure that catalyzes the dissemination of research evidence that improves the engagement, outcomes, experiences, equity, and dignity of older adults within health systems. 

James is currently a recipient of a NIA K01 Career Development Award where he is undertaking a program of work seeking to improve the hospital to skilled nursing facility care transition of older adults. Prior to this, he was an inaugural scholar of a Learning Health System K12 Career Development Program funded by the AHRQ and PCORI. His work in this program focused on creating age-friendly care transitions using telehealth technologies. 

 

Marla Berg-Weger PhD LCSW

Professor Emerita, Saint Louis University School of Social Work and Executive Director, Gateway Geriatric Education Center, Division of Geriatric Medicine, School of Medicine

 

Bio

Dr. Marla Berg-Weger, Professor Emerita, Saint Louis University School of Social Work is the Executive Director of the Gateway Geriatric Education Center in the Division of Geriatric Medicine, School of Medicine. She is the Project Director of the HRSA-funded Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) which includes a focus on supporting Age-Friendly Health Systems transformations. Since 2019, our GWEP has partnered with six health care organiztions, five of which have achieved Level 2 recognition. 

Her scholarly work has focused on family caregiving, non-pharmacologic interventions for persons with dementia, loneliness and social isolation, age-friendly health and behavioral health care, driving and older adults, and social work practice. She has authored four books—two in 6th edition—and over 100 publications. She is a past president of the National Association for Geriatric Education and the Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work and Chair of the Gerontological Society of America Social Research and Policy Practice Section. 

 

 

Robert Burke, MD, MS

Associate Chief for Research in both the Division of General Internal Medicine and Division of Hospital Medicine, and a tenured Associate Professor of Medicine, Perelman School of Medicine

Bio

Dr. Robert E. Burke is the Associate Chief for Research in both the Division of General Internal Medicine and Division of Hospital Medicine, and a tenured Associate Professor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine. He is a Core Investigator at the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. Dr. Burke’s research – funded by NIH, AHRQ, and VHA - seeks to reduce unnecessary hospitalizations and long-term nursing home care for frail older adults. He is currently leading the SAGE QUERI program, an implementation science program center in the VHA focused on implementing evidence-based practices aligned with the Age-Friendly Health Systems model and training the next generation of AFHS researchers. He is also on the VHA’s national steering committee for Age-Friendly Health Systems.

 

Edith Burns, MD

Professor of Medicine and Director of Research, Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, Zucker School of Medicine 

 

 

Bio

Dr. Edith Burns has been Professor of Medicine, Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell since 2019. She serves as Director of Research for the Division and was former Program Director for the Geriatrics Fellowship. She was Professor of Medicine, Division of Geriatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) from 1998-2018 and remains an Adjunct Professor of Medicine on their faculty. Her work and experience over the past 35 years has spanned clinical and bench research, education and training, and clinical care. Her research has focused predominantly on older adult populations but has also encompassed younger adults and children as caregivers, and issues of women’s health and disparities in minority populations. All of her work incorporates patient, family and provider perceptions and expectations for disease and treatment outcomes, and the influence of moderating factors (e.g., cultural background, social media, etc.) on adherence to treatment, health outcomes and quality of life among older adults. 

Dr. Burns has become involved in assessing the impact of the Age Friendly Health System initiative on patient outcomes since joining Northwell, how age-friendly care incorporates patient/family illness perceptions to impact patient outcomes, and approaches to adapting and disseminating processes throughout a large integrated health care organization.

 

Howard Degenholtz, PhD

Professor of Health Policy and Management and Faculty Affiliate, Center for Bioethics and Health Law, University of Pittsburgh

 

 

Bio

Dr. Degenholtz is Professor of Health Policy and Management and Faculty Affiliate of the Center for Bioethics and Health Law.  He was the Founding Director of the Doctoral Program in Health Services Research and Policy.  Dr. Degenholtz is a health services researcher who focuses on long-term care and aging and organ donation. He is currently the lead for a seven-year evaluation of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Community HealthChoices program. He is funded by the Donaghue Foundation to examine mental health service in nursing homes and a grant from the Jewish HealthCare Foundation and the John A Hartford Foundation to evaluate the Teaching Nursing Home Coalition.  The Teaching Nursing Home Coalition is implementing the Age-Friendly Health Nursing Home 4M Model.   

He is a member of AcademyHealth and a Fellow in the Gerontological Society of America.  He is the Social Media Editor of The Gerontologist, Associate Editor for LTSS of Innovation in Aging and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Aging and Social Policy.

 

 

Mary Dolansky, PhD, RN, FAAN

Associate Professor, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and Professor at the School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University

Bio

Dr. Dolansky is the Sarah C. Hirsh Endowed Professor at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and Associate Professor at the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. She was the national advisor for the Advanced Fellowship VA Quality Scholars (VAQS) program and now serves as senior VAQS faculty at the VA North East Ohio Health System. She is currently leading an academic clinical partnership implementing the Age-Friendly Health Systems into 1,000 MinuteClinics across the county funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation. She serves on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Age-Friendly Health Systems National Advisory Committee. Her passion is improving the health of older adults through system-based Improvement.

 

Elizabeth Eckstrom, MD, MPH, MACP

Professor and Chief of Geriatrics, Division of General Internal Medicine & Geriatrics at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). 

Bio

Dr. Elizabeth Eckstrom is Professor and Chief of Geriatrics in the Division of General Internal Medicine & Geriatrics at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Her research focuses on the 4Ms of Age Friendly Health System (AFHS). Elizabeth has combined her work across the 4Ms to lead all 12 OHSU ambulatory care sites to receive Committed to Care Excellence-level status through IHI, as well as multiple inpatient services. In 2021, her team published a paper on identifying disparities in receipt of age-friendly care across our health care system, and we are now working to reduce these disparities. In addition, she is Director of Integrating Special Populations for the Oregon Clinical & Translational Research Institute and has led a project to train non-aging trained research teams in Age Friendly Research. This work is ongoing, and Elizabeth is happy to share/present to other institutions who are working to ensure all their research teams are able to include older adults in research on health conditions relevant to them. 

 

Kellie Flood, MD

Adjunct Professor, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care 

 

Bio

Dr. Flood was recruited to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care to develop evidence-based geriatric care models for what is now the 1,257-bed UAB Hospital. Over the past 18 years Dr. Flood has served as the physician leader for multiple geriatric care model program development teams at UAB.  Using the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Plan-Do-Study-Act and Rapid Change methodology, coupled with Kotter’s 8-Steps for Leading Change framework, multiple geriatric care programs are now part of standard operations at UAB.

UAB Hospital participated in the first cohort of the IHI Age-Friendly Health Systems movement and achieved Committed to Care Excellence status. Currently, Dr. Flood serves as UAB Health System’s first Chief Clinical Officer for Care Continuum Services. Dr. Flood’s research focus is outcomes in hospitalized older adults and interprofessional team models of care. 

 

 

Andrea Wershof Schwartz, MD MPH AGSF

Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Associate Director for Clinical Innovation, New England Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center

Bio

Dr. Andrea Wershof Schwartz is a geriatrician and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School where she directs the Geriatrics Theme for medical students. Dr. Schwartz is Associate Director for Clinical Innovation of the New England Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center at VA Boston Healthcare System, and serves as co-chair of the VA's national Age-Friendly Steering Committee. Dr. Schwartz serves as faculty for the IHI's Age-Friendly action communities, and her research focuses on Age-Friendly Health professions education and implementation of the 4Ms across clinical settings.
